What is a Heart Healthy Diet?

Managing Cardiovascular Disease

One of the most important ways to manage Cardiovascular Disease is to follow a heart healthy diet. Eliminating processed food high in cholesterol and fat are just a couple of the basic things to do when following a heart healthy diet, however, there are other things to keep in mind. Keep reading to learn more about what a heart healthy diet consists of, other ways to manage CD, and how a Cardiovascular Disease Clinical Study can help you.

Heart Healthy Diet Guidelines

When following a heart healthy diet, it is important to eat an overall healthy dietary pattern that emphasizes:

  • A wide variety of fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains and products made up mostly of whole grains
  • Healthy sources of protein (Mostly plants such as legumes, and nuts; fish and seafood; low-fat or fat-free dairy; and, if you eat meat and poultry, ensure it is lean and unprocessed.)
  • Liquid non-tropical vegetable oils such as canola, corn, olive, soybean and sunflower oils.
  • Minimally processed foods
  • Minimized intake of added sugars
  • Foods prepared with little or no salt
  • Limited or preferably no alcohol intake

It is possible to follow a heart-healthy dietary pattern regardless of whether food is prepared at home, ordered in a restaurant or online, or purchased as a prepared meal. Read the Nutrition Facts and ingredient list on packaged food labels to choose those with less sodium, added sugars and saturated fat. Look for the Heart-Check mark to find foods that have been certified by the American Heart Association as heart-healthy.

Other Ways to Manage Cardiovascular Disease

In addition to following a heart healthy diet, it is important to do the following when managing Cardiovascular Disease:

  • Get exercise every day, even if it’s a 20 minute walk
  • Sleep at least 7-9 hours per night to rest your heart
  • Practice self-care to manage your stress levels
  • Quit smoking and quit or limit drinking, as it can raise your blood pressure
  • Maintain a healthy weight
